Carillion Construction Limited have won the London Gateway Port contract for flood prevention work at Shell Haven, Stanford-le-Hope.
The contract, worth £2.45 million, covers flood prevention at the Gateway Port’s Shell Haven site. The reclamation of land for development of the port involves the loss of inter-tidal areas which are the breeding and feeding grounds of birds and marine life.
The work is to provide an alternative site for the wildlife as compensation for the areas lost. Site A is agricultural land and covers an area of approximately 37 ha. Some 33 ha of intertidal mudflat will be created by breaching the existing flood embankment and removing topsoil in the area that will be subject to tidal inundation. A new flood wall is to be constructed around the rear of the site.
According to mixing specialists Chemineer, the pressure on the water industry to reduce spiralling energy costs could see a major switch to top-entry mixers, which are cutting bills by up to a staggering 85% compared to submersible mixers.
