Dwr Cymru set out plans for new sewer scheme at Porthcawl
Thursday, 02 October 2008

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water will be holding a public exhibition next week to explain a £1.4 million scheme to reduce the risk of flooding from its sewers to properties in the town. The scheme to improve the performance of the wastewater network involves the replacement of 750 metres of sewers and will increase capacity on the network and reduce the risk of flooding during storm weather conditions.

Work on the scheme is due to begin on 3rd November and is expected to be completed by the end of Easter 2009. Members of the project team will be at the exhibition to provide details of the scheme.

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water delivery manager Martin Kilroy said:

“The exhibition is being held as part of our commitment to keep people and businesses in the area informed about the project. The scheme is essential to help us deliver improvements to customers by alleviating their homes from the risk of internal flooding.”

A separate Welsh Water scheme will also be carried out in Porthcawl, to replace the sea outfall at Seafront Beach. Although the concrete outfall pipe still operates as it should, structural wear and tear has meant the work is needed to safeguard public health and safety. The work, to be carried out by contract partners, Kelda, is due to start in early October and will take approximately five months to complete due to tidal conditions.

Welsh Water are also starting work on a £340,000 scheme to improve the performance of Pontardawe’s wastewater network and benefit river water quality in the area. The project to lay 120 metres of new sewer, construct a combined sewer overflow and replace an existing pipe passing underneath the Swansea Canal is due to begin at the end of the month. The work will improve the performance of the network and deliver benefits by reducing the amount of storm water which occasionally enters the Upper Clydach River during periods of torrential rain.

Contract partners, Morrison Construction are delivering both Porthcawl and Pontardawe refurbishment schemes on behalf of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water.
