Monday, 08 September 2008

The latest flooding update from the Environment Agency says that after heavy rain in Wales, the Southwest and the Midlands the event is now primarily focussed in the Northeast. The Agency is continuing to monitoring the river levels throughout England and Wales closely in order to provide the most up to date flood warning information, with staff manning incident rooms around the clock. The Agency currently has 49 flood warnings and 105 flood watches in place across the UK. Over the weekend a total of 227 separate flood warnings were in place over the weekend.

The Met Office is warning that further heavy rain is expected tomorrow - falling on already saturated ground.  Over a month's rainfall has fallen in two days in some areas. Morpeth in Northumbria has been particularly badly affected - 900 homes were evacuated when the town was hit by the worst floods it has experienced since 1963.
