Major contract win to improve drinking water in Turkey
Monday, 14 January 2008

MWH is part of a consortium that has been awarded a major EU contract to provide technical assistance to prepare drinking water supply projects for eight municipalities in Turkey.

The 2.6 million EURO project involves preparation and design work for major infrastructure and water distribution network projects that will bring significant health, environmental and social benefits to communities across Turkey.

The consortium is led by COWI A/S (DK) in association with MWH UK Ltd (UK), MWH SA/NV (BE), SNS Mühendislik ve Müşavirlik Ltd. Şti. (TR), and Su-Yapı Engineering and Consulting Inc. (TR).

The 12-month project starting on December 15th covers the preparation of feasibility studies, master plans, environmental impact assessments, design work, the preparation of tender documents for the various construction projects and applications for EU aid.

The municipalities are Erzincan, Nizip (Gaziantep), Akçaabat (Trabzon), Manavgat (Antalya), Silvan (Diyarbakır), Erciş (Van), Doğubayazıt (Ağrı) and Bulancak (Giresun). Each of the municipalities has different water infrastructure needs and projects include building new water distribution networks, transmission lines, pumping stations, water treatment plants and storage tanks, and removing outdated existing infrastructure.

Neslihan Artar Aybar, Country Manager for MWH Turkey, said: “This is a very exciting contract win for us and we are delighted to be involved in such an important project which is part of Turkey’s efforts to improve its environmental infrastructure to meet the requirements of EU legislation.” Turkey is a candidate country for EU membership.

“The various projects will have a very positive impact on the lives of communities across the country in terms of health and hygiene by improving the quality and supply of drinking water,” she said.

MWH will be contributing its technical expertise with the preparation of feasibility studies, master plans, design work and environmental impact assessments for projects in several municipalities. Specialists from across Europe will carry out the work, with staff from MWH Turkey providing technical assistance and support on the ground.
