EC looks to industry to help address Europe's water challenge

Stavros Dimas, the EU Commissioner responsible for environment called for industry to play a greater role in conserving increasingly scarce water resources when he addressed the Saving Europe's Water Conference in Brussels last week.

 
96% of Bathing Water Quality Standards met – but Environment Agency calls for more from water sector

Ninety-six per cent of England's bathing waters met the minimum water quality standards set by the European Bathing Water Directive this year and 65.7 per cent met the highest guideline standards according to tests carried out by the Environment Agency.
 
CIWEM calls for increased flood funding and national-level flood risk authorities

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is calling for national-level authorities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to oversee all types of flood and coastal erosion risk management, working closely with local delivery organisations.

Anglian water fined £150K - operational and management failures highlighted

Anglian Water Services Ltd (Anglian Water) was fined a total of £150,000  last week for four times allowing illegal discharges from its sewage treatment works in Newmarket to the No 1 Public Drain – on one occasion bringing about the death of 1,200 fish.

The Environment Agency has announced that more areas around the country will benefit from help to tackle harmful water pollution. The England Catchment Sensitive Farming Delivery Initiative (which plays a key role in implementation of the Water Framework Directive) aims to help farmers to reduce diffuse water pollution from agricultural land through a range of advice and incentives.
