NI Water publishes first annual report
Tuesday, 23 September 2008

Northern Ireland Water (NI Water) has published its first Annual Report. The company’s success in beginning to modernise our infrastructure, boost customer service and increase efficiency levels are identified as the main achievements of the company during its first year of trading.  This progress has been made against the backdrop of a number of high profile challenges for the company.

Highlights of the Annual Report include:
  • £252M in capital expenditure delivered
  • £34M dividend paid to Department for Regional Development
  • Majority of KPIs achieved

Chairman and Chief Executive Chris Mellor commented:

“While we have made significant progress in a very short space of time, we are conscious of the high levels of public interest in our service and the need to deliver a modern and efficient utility. This will be achieved by making further improvements to our infrastructure, cutting our costs, and placing customer service at the centre of everything we do.”

Chris Mellor continued:

“In our first year of operations we have enjoyed some major achievements.  The quality of drinking water in Northern Ireland continues to improve - in 2007 we exceeded our Operational Performance Indicator for drinking water quality achieving 98.98%.  Similarly, we exceeded our wastewater compliance target with over 84% of customers supplied by compliant works and we reduced leakage for the sixth consecutive year.  We met or exceeded our key targets in twelve out of twenty one areas and in those where we did not reach the target we have already made significant progress towards addressing the underlying problems.”

“In our first year of operation, we have also responded to a number of significant challenges.  We are aware that as we seek to replace an infrastructure that is more than 100 years old in places and build a modern and efficient service, we are also likely to face many more challenges.  Acting as one team and in consultation with our key stakeholders, NI Water will remain focussed on its core objective – delivering reliable and cost effective water and wastewater services to all of Northern Ireland.”
