Southern Water is applying for planning permission to develop a new source of water supply. The source will be from the River Arun in the Horsham district in Sussex.
The scheme involves a new abstraction on the tidal River Arun near Pulborough with a water storage pond, pumping stations and a 1.8km pipeline to the existing Hardham Water Supply Works where the water would be treated.
Meyrick Gough, Southern Water’s Water Resources Strategy Manager, said:
“This scheme will enable us to pump up to 10 million litres of water a day from the River Arun, which will be vital during times of drought and low flow in the River Rother.
“We discussed our plans with local people at an exhibition in the summer, when more than 70 people visited us. Their views have helped us develop our final proposals and we will continue to consult closely with the local community about this important scheme.”
If planning permission is granted it is expected construction would begin late in 2010.
