United Utilities has won a major award for its achievements in developing more sustainable environmental technologies. It has also been highly commended for operating its business in an environmentally sustainable way.
The company won the Tata Consultancy Services Marketplace Innovation Award at the annual Business in the Community Awards - the UK’s leading award scheme for responsible business.
The prize-winning innovation is a unique process of disposing of sewage sludge called enzymic hydrolysis which enables vital nutrients to be returned to farmland.
Stephen Howard, Chief Executive of Business in the Community, said: "United Utilities is an example of a company that is not afraid to move with the times, creating new products and services to meet social or environmental needs. This sense of innovation is key to tackling some of the biggest issues of today and is an example to follow."
Philip Green, CEO of United Utilities, said: "We’re delighted and honoured that our efforts and achievements in providing first-class services to our customers in a way that is both sustainable and environmentally responsible are being recognised.
“Our objective is to be a world-class provider of utilities while developing improved techniques and technology that can be used across our industry.”
Mark Bretton from Tata Consultancy Services, which sponsored the award, was also one of the judges. He said: "United Utilities have taken an old process, thought about how to improve it and re-invented it. Enzymic hydrolysis is now being used across the water sector, and UU are working with partners to ensure the widest possible application of the smart technology.
“The judges were impressed with the potential for the technology to kick-start the development of a waste management infrastructure and address the problem of organic and food waste sent to landfill."
