In an interview in today’s Daily Telegraph, Philip Green, Chief Executive of United Utilities describes water as ‘the new oil’ as a result of climate change.
The wide-ranging interview covers topics ranging from bottled water to giving up his BMW - 'partly financial, partly environmental' decison.
Philip Green is hopeful that there will be no need for water rationing as climate change takes hold, citing desalination technology as one of the measures available to maintain supply. With regard to flooding, United Utilities has estimated the cost of building defences at £1 billion – a figure that Green says United Utilities can meet if spread over ten years, but that it is for the Government to decide how much should be invested. With regard to the current price review, and whether customers or taxpayers should pay for flood investments, Green exercises caution, commenting simply that with so many factors to consider ‘it’s too early to predict prices in 2010.”
