Drainage supplier Asset International today announced it had reached a partnership agreement with Welsh Water that will allow the use of light-weight plastic storm drains. The products, known as Weholite, provide all the technical advantages of polyethylene solid wall pipes, but offer substantial savings in weight and ease of installation thereby offering lower overall installed costs than traditional materials, claimed Asset. This agreement means that Weholite products are now approved for use by all water companies in the UK. Under the administration of the British Plastics Federation’s Plastic Pipes Group, the agreement will ensure the maintenance of agreed standards governing design, product quality, installation, maintenance and repair. David Evans, associate director at Arup and chairman of the Welsh Water Product Group, said: “Our unique ‘parallel partnering’ approach means that any issues affecting the introduction of this new technology have been worked through with the manufacturer to ensure a standardised approach to installation and acceptable levels of backup and inspection.”
