Wessex Water will unveil its proposals to build four wind power turbines in Avonmouth at an exhibition in Bristol today. Wessex Water is planning to build the turbines at its Bristol Sewage Treatment Works off Kingsweston Lane.
The turbines, which will be similar to those already operating at Avonmouth docks, will be capable of generating up to 3MW of electricity – enough electricity to meet the needs of more than 6,000 households.
The company already generates electricity from biogas produced through the sewage treatment process and is now turning to wind power as part of its aim for 20% of its energy to be generated from renewable sources by 2010.
Project manager Steve Carver, from Wessex Water, said:
“The introduction of wind turbines at Avonmouth is an essential part of Wessex Water’s sustainability plans because wind energy is the most economic renewable energy resource available in the UK.
“We are planning to have four turbines which will all be located within the site of the sewage treatment works at Avonmouth. We are hoping to start work to build the wind turbines in summer 2009.”
