Northumbrian Water has gone out to tender with an AMP7 contract for an upgrade to its Howdon Sewage Treatment Works (STW) worth an estimated £120 million in total.

The water company is looking to appoint a contractor to construct an upgrade to Howdon - some assets on the existing STW require replacing to increase the overall resilience at the site.
Phase 1 will include two new pumping stations to transfer flows (6,200l/sec) from one process area to another and a storm tank.
Estimated value of the Phase 1work is £40 milllion. Northumbrian Water may also direct the award of Phase 2 of the project to the successful tenderer for Phase 1, due to it being an extension of the original work which will consist of similar work activity. Any award of Phase 2 would be subject to the satisfactory performance of the successful tenderer for Phase 1 and the ability to agree the price and programme for Phase 2.
Northumbrian Water will retain sole discretion on whether Phase 2 would be directly awarded to the successful tenderer or an alternative procurement would be carried out.
The estimated value of Phase 2 is £80 million - Phase 2 scope includes new secondary treatment, final settlement, UV treatment and a storm tank. The water company expects any shortlisted contractors to engage in value engineering to ensure maximum value can be delivered for the available budget.
Northumbrian Water said it is looking to appoint a contractor to work collaboratively in line with NWL's vision and values while driving innovation and efficiency throughout the lifecycle of the project.
Anticipated start date is 1 April 2023 with an estimated completion date of 31 March 2025.
Time limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is 16 September 2022 – click here to access the tender documentation.
