Southern Water awards £1 billion AMP8 contract for half hourly non-domestic electricity supply & associated services

Southern Water has awarded a major AMP8 contract for half hourly non-domestic electricity supply and associated services beginning 1 April 2025 worth an estimated £1 billion in total.

ELECTRICITY PYLONS 1

The water company went out tender in November 2023 with the aim of appointing a single OFGEM registered framework provider capable of supplying electricity to its Half-Hourly Electricity Portfolio, together with a range of associated services.

Southern Water's Half Hourly Electricity Portfolio consists of around 600 supply points with total annual usage circa 370GWh, making the water company one of the largest energy users in the South of England.

Historically, the utility’s HH electricity demand shape could be considered flat/stable. Southern Water said that while renewable generation is likely to increase during the term of the framework agreement, the overall demand also has the potential to increase as well.

Scope of the wide-ranging contract incorporates non-domestic half hourly electricity supply and associated services, including:

  • contract & billing management
  • performance management & reporting
  • legislation and market updates
  • asset services if applicable
  • reporting and analytics services
  • account management services
  • energy efficiency programmes and initiatives
  • sleeving
  • REGOs
  • decarbonisation programme options

SmartestEnergy Ltd, one of two companies who tendered for the work, have been awarded the contract, which will run for an initial term of 5 years with a further potential extension of up to 3 years.

SmartestEnergy Ltd. was established in the U.K. in 2001 as part of the power division of Japan-headquartered group Marubeni to conduct aggregation/whole-procurement and retail sale of primarily renewably generated power to the U.K. power market.
