Brodsworth Main Colliery lies within the Barnlsey-Manvers-Grimethorpe sub-block of the South Yorkshire Coalfield and the borehole is to intersect mine workings which are understood to be flooded with the intention of monitoring mine water levels and chemistry.

The MRA said the initiative aims to enhance the understanding of mine water behaviour in the region

and to inform future management strategies.

Drilcorp Ltd has been awarded the contract – start and end dates are 12 January 2026 to 26 June 2026

with a further possible extension option to 25 September 2026 due to the high likelihood of operational delays.

The company was one of three firms who tendered for the work.
