2nd AMP cycle supply chain summit to take place in November

Leading water sector organisations British Water and Water UK are to hold a second Rollercoaster Summit in November on smoothing the AMP investment cycles in the water sector.

In February 2012, British Water and Water UK, who respectively represent the water sector supply chain and the utility companies held the first Summit to look at the impact the ongoing cycle has on the supply chain, water companies and customers.

The Summit discussed how water companies and the supply chain can work together to flatten the profile of expenditure and increase efficiency for the benefit of all.

The Government committed, as part of the Infrastructure Cost Review programme, to work with Ofwat and the water industry to understand the impacts and causes of highly cyclical investment profiles in the water sector.

Subsequently in July HM Treasury published a study entitled Smoothing investment cycles in the water sector which stated:

“The objective of this study has been to identify best practice and to make recommendations to enable key stakeholders to help smooth out investment cycles. This will in turn result in reduced costs to consumers and promote growth and sustainability in a vital sector of infrastructure delivery.

“The study team, comprising of Infrastructure UK (part of HM Treasury), and Ofwat, has sought to investigate the causes of cyclical investment and how regulatory incentives and mechanisms translate through to the water companies and the supply chain into the decisions and actions that perpetuate the issue.”

The aim of the second summit is to gain a better understanding of the report and its impact on the water companies, the regulators and the supply chain and to develop a clear understanding of the way forward.

The Summit, which will take place at the Emirates Stadium in London on 15 November, includes confirmed speakers from Infrastructure UK, Ofwat, British Water, the Society of British Water and Wastewater Industries and the Civil Engineering Contractors Association.

Chaired by Chris Loughlin, Chief Executive, South West Water, speakers from the water companies include Graham Murphy, Engineering Director, at South West Water ,David Widowson, Manager of Finance and Reporting - Asset Delivery at Yorkshire Water and Neil Wilson, Head of Risk and Investment at Wessex Water.

The presentations will be followed by Workshop Discussions and a Q & A Panel Session.
