Following public consultation with residents, North Lincolnshire Council is ready to press ahead with a £13.3 million flood defence scheme to protect towns and villages on both sides of the Trent.

Following a tender process, the building contract for the flood defences has been awarded to the VBA joint venture (Volkerstevin, Boskalis Westminster and Atkins),  who will start on site in January 2018 after preparatory works have been completed.

The defence scheme will see 3.5km of sheet piles installed along the east bank of the river from the M180 to Keadby Bridge. The extensive flood defence will provide significant protection to the villages of Burringham, Gunness and East Butterwick.

Across the river on the west bank, the defences will be raised where there are low spots to protect communities across the Isle of Axholme.

North Lincolnshire Council secured the £13.3 million funding from the government’s Northern Powerhouse Local Growth Fund, awarded by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

The flood defences will also form a key role in the council’s ambitious £1.2 billion plan to build six new villages to the east of the River Trent.

Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

The Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is the allocating funder for the Local Growth Fund in the area.

The government-funded project is due for completion in March 2019.
