Flood warnings in place across Yorkshire as Hull and Foss barriers deployed

Heavy rain over the weekend has lead to widespread flood warnings across Yorkshire and north West England - over 250 flood warnings are currently in place ncluding 74 where flooding is expected and immediate action is required.

High tides and strong winds at times mean coastal/tidal flooding is possible for many parts of the English and Welsh coastline from today until Wednesday, according to the latest report from the Flood Information Service.

Local river and surface water flooding is likely to continue across mainly northern and central parts of England and also Wales until Tuesday, due to further heavy rain and showers.

Sea fronts at Hornsea, Bridlington and Easington near Spurn Point are all at risk of flooding because of high tides with flood warnings in place.

Flood warnings have been issued for the River Ouse, Swale and Ure in Yorkshire - the Foss Barrier is in operation in York where riverside properties have been affected because of heavy rain and the Hull Barrier has also been deployed.

River levels are forecast to rise until the early hours of Tuesday morning as a result of the heavy rainfall.

The latest Met Office weather forecast says heavy rain is expected to persist across northern England today, with heavy showers over Wales and southern England tomorrow.
