Submissions open for 2016 World Water Week abstracts and event proposals

The Stockholm International Water Institute has just opened the online submission system for abstracts and event proposals for next year’s World Water Week which takes place from 28Th August to 2nd September 2016.

Abstracts can be submitted for an oral presentation or for poster presentation- all authors must identify a corresponding seminar in which their abstract would be presented. The seminars of World Water Week 2016 will have the following themes:

  • Water as a driver for sustainable growth – making it happen?
  • Water security in a changing world: coping with threats
  • Water and job opportunities: a critical nexus for growth
  • Ecosystem degradation and livelihoods: moving from vicious to virtuous cycles
  • Water for sustainable and inclusive cities – how to induce change?
  • Water to fuel business growth
  • Financing water infrastructure for sustainable growth
  • Good water governance for inclusive growth and poverty reduction

SIWI said the abstracts will be evaluated and accepted on the basis of their relevance as well as their scientific quality. The Scientific Programme Committee will grade the abstracts against the following criteria:

  • Extent to which it advances knowledge of and/or innovation within the subject
  • Scientific quality and originality of the subject treatment
  • Practical applications of content
  • The capacity for procedures or practices described to be replicated

SIWI is also separately inviting proposals from organisations or companies who wish to host an event at the World Water Week.

The focus of the 2016 World Water Week will be on Water for Sustainable Growth- SIWI is especially interested in proposals that expand on topics raised in the thematic scope, including:

  • the role of water in implementation and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • putting water on the development agenda;
  • water and economic development;
  • water and social progress and equity;
  • water and the maintenance of a healthy and rich environment;
  • water in development policy and governance coordination, water and technological development;
  • and  water and urban and/or rural development.

Where appropriate, SIWI will in some cases propose a merger between similar or complementary event proposals. The following criteria will be used to guide the selection:

  • Multi-disciplinary discussion: the integration of different areas of expertise aiming at avoiding trade-offs and promoting participation from non-water actors.
  • Stakeholder diversity: the promotion of diverse interests and organisational types encouraging constructive debate between stakeholders.
  • Development focus: the integration of aspects of poverty reduction, sustainable development, gender equality, integrity and human rights.
  • Outputs and impact: the concreteness of key messages for improving the science, policy and practice.
  • New thinking, findings or approaches: the focus on current debates and the generation of new ideas and solutions, including learning from failure.

Deadline for online submissions for abstracts and events proposals is 24 January 2016.
