CIWEM conference to highlight impact of climate change on water sector

Leading environmental professional body CIWEM is holding a one day conference on 17th November which will focus on the impacts of climate change and the water sector - including how Ofwat will address the issue in the upcoming price review.

The event will focus on how the sector can integrate adaptation and mitigation in practice.

The aim of the conference is to take stock of current thinking on climate change and the developing evidence base on emissions and risks. By covering both adaptation and mitigation and their inter-relationships CIWEM will look at how this thinking is being put into practice in response to the major drivers.

Issues covered will include methods and practice currently being developed and used in response to a range of current policy drivers:

  • Climate Change Act
  • Future Price Limits (Ofwat)
  • EU Directives (e.g. Water Framework)
  • development of new Water Resource Management Plans.

The conference, to be held at SOAS, University of London, is designed to provide a wide range of practical ideas for professionals working in the wider water sector.

Speakers include Geoff Darch, Chair of CIWEM’s Climate Change Network and Principal Consultant at Atkins, who will give an overview of main issues including the range of Government programmes in climate change and links to the water sector and Mike Keil from Ofwat who will look at the policy expectations for the next price review in terms of climate change.

Justin Taberham, CIWEM’s Director of Policy commented:

“By organising this event CIWEM hopes to increase the relevance of climate change to business planning by the UK water companies, particularly in the context of the upcoming AMP6 investment cycle. CIWEM one day conferences provide a great opportunity for delegates to hear from other experts on the latest developments and to network with professionals in the sector.”
