Innovative water meter technology will drastically reduce infrastructure costs

Italian manufacturer Maddalena S.p.A, a global player in the water metering field, is set to launch ARROWWAN, an innovative technology which will drastically reduce the cost of AMI infrastructure  for utilities and allow them to use the same network to fully exploit Internet of Things applications for the water sector.

ArrowMvm868CassaCompositoFor some years now, Maddalena has been directly testing the new LowPowerWideAreaNetwork (LPWAN) technologies, specifically conceived for the Internet of Things. IoT technologies are increasingly being used as part of the roll out of smart meters to  manage essential information, particularly in the water sector.

Traditional radio technologies, although widely used in sub-metering (indoor divisional meters), are not able to meet the needs of the utility sector. The LPWAN solution is an efficient and sustainable outdoor fixed Wide Area Network, which allows long-range connectivity and meets the specific needs of the utility sector by drastically reducing the cost of infrastructure (AMI). The new technologies also provide the opportunity to use the same network for several other devices and sensors, particularly in smart cities applications.

 Maddalena S.p.A has developed notable expertise in the field of water meters. Founded in 1919 by Avvocato Giacinto Maddalena, the firm has specialised in developing a wide range of solutions for the measurements of liquids in a range of applications, including , industrial and bulk metering, domestic use, irrigation and thermal energy. With an ongoing commitment to product innovation and quality, Maddalena also provides solutions for smart communication increasingly in demand today to meet the needs of both sub-metering and public utilities.

The broad array of products offered by the company is the result of  decades of experience and of a commitment to research and development in order to offer new technological solutions, which deliver the best performances and results to an ever-changing and demanding clientele.

Maddalena is now ready to launch on the market the very first multi-protocol water meter endpoint solution dedicated to water utilities: ARROWWAN

ARROWWAN is a new compact multi-protocol radio which is a perfect match with Maddalena’s range of MVM volumetric water meters. This solution provides a flexible smart water endpoint adopting a consolidated top-range mechanical meter (MID approved up to R 800).

ARROWWAN is compatible with the current wM-Bus standard (EN 13757 and AFNOR E17Z), and it can also support the new LPWAN solutions such as LoRa™ and Sigfox .  Thanks to the integrated NFC interface, the transmission mode is easy and intuitive to select  - users will be able to select the mode simply by using a smartphone.

ArrowMvm868CassaOttoneARROWWAN will be available in two versions:

1) 868 MHz, multi-protocol: wM-Bus, LoRa™, Sigfox;

2) 169 MHz, multi-protocol: wM-Bus, LoRa™.

The new smart water meter endpoint has already enabled Maddalena to specify the technology  in major contracts with key water utilities at European level for a range of upcoming projects in the next 12 months , with orders placed for some 200,000 units in total.
