Specialist industrial cleaning and hydro demolition services provider Ammlee Group International says that hydro demolition is now increasingly recognised by civil engineers, structural engineers and consultants as the safest, most effective, vibration-free method of concrete removal.
Headquartered in Belfast and with a strong client base in both the UK and Europe, the Group is now strengthening its presence to take advantage of the growing business development opportunities on offer.
Neal McArthur, director at Ammlee Group’s Northern Ireland office commented:
“We are seeing increasing levels of interest from a wide range of industrial sectors in the UK, including the construction and mining industries. We’re currently in the process of further strengthening our presence to offer a comprehensive range of services to customers.”

The process utilises high pressure water jets to remove concrete from around embedded metal elements such as reinforcing steel, expansion joints, anchorages, conduits, shear connectors, and shear studs. The technology can also be used to remove existing coatings from concrete.
Unlike jackhammers, hydro demolition does not produce vibrations throughout a structure and therefore does not introduce fracturing or otherwise negatively affect the integrity of remaining concrete.
The remaining structure suffers no cracking, reinforced steel is left undamaged and the concrete retains its original integrity.
Key benefits include:
- Hydro-demolition is faster than chipping, so construction schedules can be shortened.
- Water blasting removes all deteriorated concrete.
- Hydro-demolition provides better mechanical bonds for repair materials.
- No dust is created.
- Water does not chip, cut or damage reinforcing steel.
- Hydro-demolition provides a uniform depth of removal on sound concrete.
- The noise level outside the work area is less than concrete breakers. Hydro-demolition noise does not transmit through the structure being worked on.
- Fractures in sound concrete are eliminated.
- The process is very controlled and can stay within exact perimeters.
- The process can be performed in remote areas where no other removal system is possible.
Key health and safety benefit
One of the key health and safety benefits of hydro demolition is the removal of all risks of the condition commonly known as “vibration white finger” (VWF).
Superseded in professional use by the term hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) or dead finger, VWF is a secondary form of Raynaud's syndrome, an industrial injury triggered by continuous use of vibrating hand-held machinery. The symptoms of vibrating white finger are the vascular component of HAVS.
