Ahead of CIWEM’s Urban Drainage Group Conference 2024 in Birmingham from 12th to 14th November, Business Development Managers Dale Foster and Adrian Heneghan at wastewater technology specialists HUBER Technology UK flag up the benefits of the company’s CSO storm screens and the use of standardised solutions.

In the run-up to AMP8, the water companies are being urged by the government to go further and faster wherever possible to tackle sewage pollution, and where possible, deal with the most polluting overflows within 12 months.
The water companies have a number of tools in the toolbox to reduce the number, volume and frequency of spills - including CSO screens. HUBER have been supplying mechanical storm screens for the last 25 years. With the longest proven operating track record in the country and over 1400 installations in place across all the water companies, HUBER is probably the market leader in this area.
Where screening is the best option, in recent months we’ve seen that a significant number of standardised solutions for new CSO chamber and design specifications wherever possible is going to be one of the key routes for the water companies to make the rapid progress required at reasonable cost with the likelihood of significantly reduced timescales. It’s never going to be possible to put complete standardisation in place for all CSOs, but in our view standardisation could potentially be applied up to 80%.

The key benefits of standardisation include:
- Straightforward optioneering/investigation work
- Streamlined procurement
- Improved cost certainty
- Reduced construction period / overall programme = Less disruption to the public
- Solutions delivered and installed in place within 24-48 hours
- Lead times – Screens could be manufactured for stock
- Significantly reduced design activities
- Pro Forma Design review, ALM and HAZOP studies
- Reduced commissioning time and speedier handover
- Improved quality and reduced health & safety risk
We’re exhibiting at this year’s CIWEM Urban Drainage Group annual conference - and we’re happy to talk in greater detail about the CSO solutions we can provide to tackle one of the most significant investment challenges of AMP8.
At the HUBER stand we will be highlighting our innovative storm screens and standardised solutions.
By approaching each new project with the aim of understanding the problem or specific requirements, the solutions we can offer are as unique as the problems they solve.
Please come along and visit our stand where we will have a scale-working model of some of our storm screens solutions for visitors to interact with and discuss.
