Severn Trent invests £775k in sewer flooding scheme

Severn Trent is investing £775,000 in a new sewer system for Fenton in Stoke-on-Trent to prevent sewer flooding in the local area.

The company is investing in the scheme to improve the sewer system that serves two streets in Fenton.

Since the original sewer pipes were laid many years ago, the population in Fenton has increased, which is now putting extra pressure on the sewer network. Severn Trent’s programme engineer, Phil Smith said:

“In addition, we’re seeing more bouts of heavy rainfall and the sewers are struggling to cope. This has on occasions resulted in local properties suffering from sewer flooding.”

Severn Trent’s contract partner, Amey, is also putting a large underground storage tank in place which will hold around 300,000 litres of excess water, which will return to the main sewer when the rain eases off.

The work is expected to take six months to complete.
