Wessex Water is progressing with work on a £5 million scheme to help alleviate flooding in Brent Knoll and Burnham-on-Sea.

The essential work involves building a new sewage pumping station, installing several new sewers as well as making improvements to the existing sewerage system. Micro tunnelling - an innovative tunnelling technique - is being used to complete the work.

Project manager Andy Roberts said that the sewerage improvement scheme aimed to protect properties within Brent Knoll which had previously suffered from flooding in times of intense rainfall.

The work will help reduce the risk of flooding in the local area by providing extra capacity in the sewerage network as well as improve the reliability of the existing system. In March, pipework will be installed under the mainline railway north of Stoddens Lane,  which will link up the new pipework from Brent Knoll to Burnham-on-Sea.

The work is estimated to be finished by the end of October 2017.
