Scottish Water has completed three £multi-million infrastructure projects in recent weeks worth £10m in total.
The projects completed included a new £4 million pound Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) in Kingussie which will help ensure the ongoing protection of the River Spey as a Special Area of Conservation. The new works has been designed with additional future treatment capacity and will cater for the expansion of Kingussie village.
Colin Munns, Scottish Water’s Waste Water Asset Planner, said:
“This all new WWTW replaces one that was constructed in the 1960s and will ensure Kingussie has the best level of treatment well into the future. With this works, Scottish Water has built an efficient and reliable asset to benefit all our Kingussie customers.”
Located in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park, the treatment works has been specifically designed to meet current and future compliance with EU regulations for waste water treatment. The new works forms part of the important maintenance and upgrades that ensure facilities like this are able to treat waste water and return it safely to the environment.
The water company has also completed two other projects to upgrade waste water infrastructure in the East Kilbride area.
A £4.3 million refurbishment of Allers Waste Water Treatment Works, which serves customers in the east side of the town and surrounding area, has seen new, modern equipment installed at the facility. The capacity of the works has also been increased by to enable it to process an increased volume of waste water from local homes and businesses.
A new £1.7 million pumping station has also been completed at Thorntonhall, replacing an older facility serving the village, which has undergone expansion in recent years. The pumping station is used to pump waste water from local homes onwards for treatment at Philipshill Waste Water Treatment Works, before being returned safely to the environment.
New control panels have also been installed as part of the project, which means that, in the event of very heavy rainfall, the pumping station will be equipped to process an increased volume of water.
