Thames Water has over 3900 km of trunk mains - currently 12 % of these have specific access points for the insertion of leak detection equipment. The successful suppliers will be required to provide fully trained and competent teams using an insertion device for the surveying and identification of leaks. Any invasive leak detection technology must be able to fit within pre-installed access points no bigger than 80 mm in width and operate within water flows of 0,2 m/s and higher.

The planning and scheduling work will be carried out by Thames Water.

Lot 1, which is worth an estimated £17.6 million, covers the provision of invasive leak detection services.

The scope of Lot 2, worth £8 million, covers correlation leak detection and monitoring services, and requires the service provider to conduct thorough correlation surveys to highlight potential leaks on trunk mains with diameters 300 mm (12”) and above across the Thames Water region. The surveys will be carried out by connecting sensors to suitable fittings over the distance of the main – with distances kept between 200 m-500 m per correlation survey where possible..

Initial contract term is 3 years with options to extend up to a maximum of 8 years, subject to performance.

Water Research Centre Ltd, Crowder and Co. Ltd, RPS Environmental Management Ltd and Hydrosave UK Ltd have all been awarded contracts.
