Anglian Water invests £3 million in Clacton coastal protection scheme

A major coastal protection scheme in Clacton is set to receive with a funding boost of £3 million from Anglian Water.

The £3million cash injection is being invested as part of an innovative move by Anglian Water to fund partnership projects that overcome the challenges presented by the complex, interconnected drainage network that exists in every town and city to reduce the risk of flooding to its customers and equipment.

Clacton’s new coastal defences will protect more than 3,000 residential and commercial properties for the next 100 years.

Jonathan Glerum, Anglian Water’s flood risk manager, said:

“Funding partner projects like this is a first for the water industry and one that we are pioneering to reduce the risk of flooding while at the same time getting the best value for customers’ money.”

“Between now and 2020 we will invest more than £8million in a variety of partner schemes and we welcome the opportunity to continue working in partnership with TDC along the coast.”

Cllr Nick Turner, Tendring District Council’s Cabinet Member for Coastal Protection welcomed the significant input from Anglian Water and said he hoped other utility companies would chip in.

“This is a great example of the public and private sector working together on a project of regional - if not national – importance,” he added. “We will be contacting other companies about Anglian Water’s input to encourage them to do the same.”

The overall project which includes building 23 new rock fishtail groynes and recharging beaches is currently under budget and ahead of schedule and due for completion in the autumn.

Work on the rock groynes is now complete and the beach recharge is well underway. Three new beaches – those closest to Clacton and up to Vista Road – were reopened on Friday and will remain so for the rest of the summer.
