Flooding and Flood Defence

In its submission to Treasury ahead of the March Budget, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is urging the Government to return capital and maintenance investment in flood risk management to pre-2010 levels in real terms.

Minister gives MPs flood progress update

Communities and Local Government Minister Eric Pickles gave the House of Commons an update yesterday on how the Government’s flood response and recovery work is progressing.

 

Anglian Water is starting work this month on two schemes with a combined value of £1,250,000 to protect properties against sewer flooding in the face of changing weather patterns and heavy rainfall.

Seventeen professional bodies, including the Chartered Institution for Water and Environmental Management, are calling on the Government to use their expertise to develop a long-term flood strategy for the UK as a matter of urgency.

The Welsh Government has said that it is neither affordable or sustainable to defend the entire Welsh coast  and that a risk-based approach must be taken instead  to flood and coastal erosion management.

The Environment Agency is formally advertising the works in preparation for work to start dredging of the Somerset Levels which will begin next month as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.

MPs to take evidence on winter floods

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee will take evidence on the recent flooding events from the Association of Drainage Authorities, Blueprint for Water Coalition and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management is calling for a reality check on floods and dredging in a newly-published report on the issue.

While debate still continues about the effectiveness of measures put in place to mitigate the current floods, national agencies appear to have overlooked an innovative Scandinavian solution which has prevented three French towns from serious flooding this year alone.

Water UK, the body which represents the UK and water and wastewater sector at national and European level, have flagged up the role played by the utilities in the emergency response to the current floods.
