PARIS FLOODWith parts of Paris under water and France facing its wettest January in more than a century, a major new report from the  OECD is warning that further improvements are needed to manage major flood risk in Paris and the Seine basin.

A £21 million flood defence scheme to better protect hundreds of businesses in Sheffield’s Lower Don Valley has opened today.

Green light for £42m Humber flood scheme

Flooding Humberhead levels 2013Funding has been secured for a £42 million upgrade to the tidal flood defence scheme in the Humber Estuary – improving flood protection to 113,000 properties.

The Environment Agency is proposing to transfer flood risk management activities on a number of stretches of watercourses to internal drainage boards (IDBs), lead local flood authorities (LLFAs) and district councils.

The government is to draw up plans setting out proposals to strengthen surface water management arrangements in response to the growing challenges of changing weather patterns and population growth and their impacts on the risk of surface water flooding.

beaver-2397083 640 1Beavers are set to be released in the Forest of Dean in plans confirmed by the Environment Secretary and the Forestry Commission -  scientists believe the beavers may be able to hold back enough water to help with flood alleviation for Lydbrook by quickly constructing natural dam structures and creating new habitat.

£19m Medway Flood Action Plan launched

The Medway Flood Partnership has launched the Medway Flood Action Plan, outlining how it will reduce the risk of flooding to 9,000 properties in communities along the River Medway in Kent.
