Flooding and Flood Defence

As part of a £7 million joint flood reduction scheme started by Northumbrian Water and the Environment Agency in October 2014, the River Ouseburn was diverted yesterday to reduce flood risk.

The Environment Agency has started work to repair the seals on the glass panels along High Hill in Keswick after they were damaged during the December 2015 floods as part of an extensive £10 million inspection and repair programme in Cumbria.

The Association of Drainage Authorities is highlighting next week’s FLOODEX conference in Peterborough on 18th and 19th May, saying it will play a vital role in bringing together key players in the industry to help find new ways of managing water levels and flood risk.

 

A new research study says that climate change and extreme weather – including unusually wet summers in the UK – are linked to high pressure weather systems over Greenland, one of the fastest-warming regions of the world.

The Environment Agency has started work on its £5 million annual flagship Lincshore scheme which sees sand dredged from the seabed and pumped onto the beach, replacing levels lost to the sea during the winter.

Eighteen months after its completion, the 2014 Worsfold Review of the Government’s Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) programme has finally been published following an intervention by the Environmental Audit Committee to get the Review into the public domain.
