Flooding and Flood Defence

TowerofLondon TowerBridge LIDAR - press releaseThe Environment Agency has revealed its armoury of unusual equipment used to tackle flooding including lasers, solar-powered cameras, a gadget-laden incident vehicle and its latest ‘weapon’ - a remote-controlled robot called Mr Nosey.

Anglian Water is getting work underway to examine 75km of sewer pipes in Southend and identify cracks and holes before they become a problem.

Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss has announced that the Government is to set up a National Flood Resilience Review to examine how to better protect the country from future flooding and increasingly extreme weather events.

Environment Agency staff working with local partners, including the emergency services and local authorities, are continuing to support communities that have been affected by flooding after Storm Desmond hit last weekend.

The Chancellor has announced an additional £51 million to support households and businesses affected by last weekend’s devastating floods in Cumbria and Lancashire - but experts are warning that the damage caused by Storm Desmond could rise to £500 million.

Teams of engineers and other specialist staff at Untited Utilities are continuing to work around the clock to maintain water supplies and wastewater services to customers in Cumbria and Lancaster after the weekend floods.

photo 3The Government is facing questions from a number of quarters over flood defence provision following  the weekend’s devastating floods in Cumbria. Leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Farron has criticised the Government for shelving 300 flood defence schemes deemed low priority.

CRANFIELD uav FLOOD PROJECTA twelve month project being undertaken by Cranfield University, which is jointly funded by the Environment Agency and EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council), is helping to improve the quality of river photography that is used for flood risk management.

An official visit to mark completion of the new flood defences at Albert Dock in Hull, built at a cost of £6.6 million, is taking place today.

Southend’s entire drainage network is currently being surveyed to create a digital model to predict flood risk.
