Flooding and Flood Defence

The Environment Agency has completed most of the repairs to flood defences in Boston after they were damaged by December’s tidal surge.

Repairs costing around £2 million to flood defences that help reduce flood risk to communities on the South Humber bank will soon be completed.

The Government risks a significant political backlash in flood-hit regions at the next general election unless it gets serious about combating climate change, according to a new poll published yesterday. 

The Government has made no new significant provision for increased investment in flood infrastructure in the Budget – despite serious concerns expressed in January by its own official advisers on climate change about the need for additional funding.

Fitch Ratings agency is warning this morning that uncertainty about UK government spending on flood defences means the Flood Re scheme to pool flood risk may face higher-than-expected claims in the future.

The Environment Agency is holding two meetings to set out plans for the second phase of a £26-million scheme to strengthen the banks of the Whittlesey Washes which is due to start later this year . 

A river will be diverted to flow along a newly constructed course if a proposed innovative £5.5 million flood protection scheme in Newcastle led by Northumbrian Water goes ahead.

The wettest winter on record is likely to result in insurers paying an estimated £1.1 billion for flood insurance claims and the projected cost of storm damage  for the period 23 December 2013 to 28 February this year, according to updated figures released today by the Association of British Insurers.

Associated British Ports, the UK’s leading ports operator, has said that the £20-million Grimsby Flood Alleviation Scheme will create inward investment potential in the area.

The House of Commons Select Committee for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has launched a new inquiry into the Government’s Flood Re insurance proposals.
