Flooding and Flood Defence

Yorkshire Water has published its long term Natural Flood Management plan for the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire.

NI Water is holding a public information event tomorrow to set out its plans for the second phase of a major flood alleviation scheme.

The Environment Agency is starting work on a £3.8 million flood scheme in Totnes – the scheme involves improving existing flood defences along the River Dart from the mainline railway bridge to the Steam Packet Inn.

Flood prevention work in the UK was described as “fragmented, ..... inefficient and sometimes ineffective, and has let people down” in last week’s Parliamentary debate on future flood prevention. MPs heard that the UK needed to look at the Netherlands approach to flood risk management.

Construction will start this summer on a £4 million flood storage area which will reduce the risk of flooding to nearly 300 homes and businesses in Broadway, Childswickham and Murcot.

Consumers can pledge their support for a campaign to end the misery caused by avoidable sewer blockages, when the Consumer Council for Water (CCWater) meets in Taunton next Tuesday.

The Environment Agency is holding a public consultation this week in Chipping Sodbury to explain how it plans to reduce flood risk to local homes and businesses in a scheme costing around £4 million.

The UK Government has told the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee that it does not agree there is a need for substantial structural change in flood risk management.

On 27 February, MPs from two Select Committees, the Environmental Audit Committee and the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee, will come together for a joint debate in the House of Commons to hold the Government to account on its management of flood risk.

The Environment Agency is progressing with the development of the £476 million River Thames flood defence scheme - a proposed programme of projects and investment to reduce flood risk in communities near Heathrow.
