Flooding and Flood Defence

Scottish Water is about to start a major environmental improvement project which will tackle sewer flooding in part of the Springburn area of Glasgow.

Mott MacDonald has begun design work on the £19 million Sheffield Lower Don Valley flood defence project, one of the largest flood protection schemes in the UK.

The Environment Agency and Slough Borough Council are seeking comment from interested stakeholders on potential options for a proposed £ 3 million flood alleviation scheme in Slough.

£26 million Morpeth flood scheme opens

Morpeth flood scheme 1The Morpeth flood scheme which opens this week will protect residents by storing millions of gallons of flood water upstream - one of the largest projects of its kind built by the Environment Agency.

A new £6 million tidal gauge for the Environment Agency will record data to improve flood forecasting,  completing a national network of 44 gauges that record information about sea levels to provide more accurate forecasts.

Severn Trent Water has joined forces with the Environment Agency and Derbyshire County Council to create a working group to tackle flooding issues in Melbourne, Derbyshire.

The Southend Flood Partnership has prepared to respond to torrential rainfall after severe weather warnings were issued for Thursday night and Friday morning by the Met Office.

The VBA jv of VolkerStevin, Boskalis Westminster and Atkins will shortly start work on behalf of the Environment Agency on two major new flood defence schemes - a £6.5 million scheme in Louth and the £8.1 million Horncastle scheme. Planning permission was granted in April and June respectively.

The Environment Agency and Slough Borough Council are working in partnership to investigate whether potential options to reduce the risk of river and surface water flooding within the catchments of the Chalvey Ditch, Salt Hill Stream and Datchet Common Brook are technically and economically viable.

A £2.9 million flood alleviation scheme planned for Barry in Wales and funded by the Welsh Government will save an estimated £50 million in potential flood damage costs.
