Flooding and Flood Defence

United Utilities has set out the steps it is taking to deal with the threats posed by flash flooding, highlighted by the Met Office severe weather warning issued for tomorrow forecasting heavy rain which may bring some river and surface water flooding across England and Wales.

The Environment Agency and Sedgemoor District Council have organised a technical workshop to update partners of the flood risk in the River Parrett catchment, outline the options for mitigating it and clarify what each option may or may not be able to achieve.

Extreme summer rainfall may become more frequent in the UK due to climate change, according to new research led by the Met Office in collaboration with Newcastle University.

A new framework has been developed by the Environment Agency to help local authorities better understand and manage flood risk in their area – including a prototype tool for flood risk assessment.

An EU-funded project is seeking to capitalise on social media by enabling citizens to monitor and report on their own environment and become the first line of defence against flooding.

The European Commission has allocated an extra €65 million to tackle the aftermath of the floods. which hit Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia.

The European Union is providing coordinated assistance folowing request for help from Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina due to severe flooding in both countries as a result of continuous rainfall that started on 13 May - in Serbia the equivalent of four month’s rainfall fell in just one day.

The Government has published a progress update on the £multi-million Thames Estuary 2100 (TE2100) Plan being managed by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs as part of the Major Projects Portfolio first Annual Report.

Bath & North East Somerset Council and the Environment Agency are working together on a major infrastructure project which will provide flood defences for parts of Bath’s city centre and begin to build a positive relationship between the city centre and the River Avon.

Environment Agency Directors have formally approved the Lower Tidal River Arun strategy which sets out recommendations for managing flood risk in the Arun Valley, from Pallingham Weir to Littlehampton and Ford.
