A year after the disastrous Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico, WWF is calling for better safeguards to protect the UK’s marine environment.

Defra sets out new plans for waterways

The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has today set out new plans to create one of Britain’s biggest charities to secure the future of more than 4,000 kilometres of canals and rivers in England and Wales.

algecirasthmbThe World Resources Institute (WRI) have identified 13 new eutrophic areas following its work back in January with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) on the identification of 534 low-oxygen “dead zones” and an additional 228 sites worldwide exhibiting signs of marine eutrophication.

Europe's water information system updated

The European Environment Agency (EEA) and partners have developed a new and improved version of the web portal Water Information System for Europe (WISE).

Midge Ure is backing Scotland's bid for the 2015 World Water Forum which is held every three years by the World Water Council to raise the profile of international water issues and attracts government leaders, engineers, academics and representatives of the global water industry.

The Scottish Assembly has published its first-ever Critical National Infrastructure Strategy to improve the security and resilience around critical infrastructure in Scotland.

The Scottish Government has published its first ever Land Use Strategy - identifying water as a key issue.

Water UK, the body which represents the UK water and wastewater companies at national and EU level, has published its response to the Scottish Government consultation on Scottish Water: 'Building a Hydro Nation.' The consultation included proposals for Scottish Water to develop its commercial activities, to take on new functions and addressed how such developments might be financed.
