HS2 releases latest project update for work up to end 2023

HS2 has released its latest project on progress made during 2023. Unprecedented in its scale, HS2 is the biggest and most ambitious infrastructure project in the UK. Watch the latest project

Key facts include:

  • more than 500 bridging structures over and under the route
  • more than 100 embankments and 70 cuttings
  • work now underway on over two thirds of HS2 viaducts and over half of its bridges
  • over 25 miles of tunnels created using giant Tunnel Boring Machines
  • over half million tonnes of London clay excavated to create underground station box at Old Oak Common terminal in London 
  • on outskirts of west London construction of Colne Valley viaduct has passed the halfway mark on its way to become UK's longest railway bridge passing across a series of lakes 
  • the largest single project in the Green Corridor programme is the creation of some 90 hectares of new chalk grassland using chalk from HS2 tunnelling activities 
  • when complete tunnels will be covered with earth and landscaped, featuring thousands of native trees and shrubs 
  • over 35 million cubic metres of material has been excavated across the HS2 route - with around 95% reused on site 
  • work is currently ongoing across over 350 active sites between London and the West Midlands
