Southern Water progresses sewer flooding work in Ryde

Southern Water is continuing to progress work on essential improvements to reduce the risk of sewer flooding in Ryde – including the installation of a 21 meter deep storage tank.

Southern Water storage tankThe existing sewer in The Strand carries both household wastewater and rainwater. This means it is at risk of flooding during heavy rain which, in turn, can lead to water backing up in the pipes and flooding nearby properties.

To tackle the problem, contractor Clancy Docwra is installing larger sewer pipes and a new underground stormwater storage tank.

The tank, which when completed will be 21-metres deep, can hold up to one million litres of water during heavy rain and release it back into the network for treatment after water levels have subsided.

Lee Hooper, Southern Water Project Manager, said:

“The improvements are progressing well and we have had fantastic support from the local community.

“All being well, we hope to have the project completed and brought online by the summer and thank everyone for their patience while the work continues.”

Clancy Docwra started work on the scheme in November.
