Severn Trent triples number of new apprentices

FTSE 100, Midlands-based company Severn Trent has recruited the largest number of apprentices it has ever taken on, tripling the size of last year’s intake.

The water company, which saw more than 800 people apply for its apprenticeship scheme, has recruited 80 new apprentices who will be placed across the whole business, in various engineering, customer relations and digital roles.

Amy Barber, new talent and development manager at Severn Trent, commented:

“We’re absolutely delighted to have 80 brand new apprentices on board. We took 28 last year so to fill an additional 52 places is great news.

“With the water industry changing so much over the next few years, it really is an exciting time to join the company. Our new apprentices have come from a mix of backgrounds – some are entering the world of work for the first time and some are starting on a new career path, but everyone will have the opportunity to learn, while earning at the same time.”

“We hope our apprentices will become experts in their field and have the scale of knowledge to become our future leaders.”

This year is the first time apprentices are joining Severn Trent at degree level, as well as at advanced and higher level apprenticeships. The water company has also given the apprentice scheme a boost by ensuring that the new joiners will have visibility across the business, right from the start. The apprentices will be working across the region with experts, other apprentices and graduates to offer them the chance to make an impact right at the start of their career.

As part of the new apprentice scheme, Severn Trent is offering Advanced and Higher apprenticeships as well as an industry leading Digital/IS Degree Apprenticeship. The four main role disciplines are:

  • Utilities Engineering Technician
  • Utilities Operation Technician
  • Asset Creation (Engineering) scheme
  • Digital/Information Systems scheme

In each discipline there are specific roles, such as mechanical, electrical and instrumentation control and automation technicians (ICA), as well as engineering and digital roles.
