Southern Water and the Environment Agency are continuing their investigations into the possible causes of pollution at Swalecliffe Brook in Kent following the discovery of dead fish and sewage at a neighbouring beach last week.
Experts have taken samples to assess the source of the sewage leak and have concluded it is not a result of any damage or fault with Southern Water's assets or sewers.
A statement from Southern Water said:
“We continue to conduct CCTV surveys of the area. Our initial findings have led us to believe that the discharge is a result of an illegal connection from a wastewater drain into the surface water sewer network.”
“We will continue to assist both the Environment Agency and Canterbury County Council in confirming the source of the pollution.”
The cause of the sewage leak is not yet known - the section of beach will remain closed off to the public for the foreseeable future
