Northumbrian Water to start work on flood protection scheme

A North Tyneside community is to benefit from a £872,000 flood protection scheme. Northumbrian Water is to upgrade the sewerage network in North Shields, to reduce the risk of flooding to 16 properties.

The work, which is to begin on Monday, June 7 2010 and take six months to complete, will involve upsizing 191 metres of sewer pipe at St Anselm Road, Billy Mill Lane and Cragside Avenue, to provide an additional 580,000 litres of storm water storage.

Graeme Ridley, project manager for the scheme, said:

“Reducing the risk of flooding is one of Northumbrian Water’s main priorities, and this scheme is part of a £1.2 billion investment between 2010 and 2015 to upgrade our vast water and sewerage networks.
