The Environment Agency is planning to develop a Water Environment Worker Apprenticeship (Trailblazer) scheme.
The Water Environment Worker will be a Level 3 apprenticeship which will take 18 months to complete. According to the Agency, it will be used by organisations with a responsibility to manage the impact of water environments, natural or manmade, on the land and surrounding businesses and homes. The water environment includes rivers, sea, lakes, wetlands, canals and reservoirs.
The Environment Agency is leading a Trailblazer group, developing a new apprenticeship standard “Water Environment Worker”. The Agency is currently working towards its submission to be fully approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships over the next few months.
Overall, around 200 apprentices a year are expected to be recruited - around 100 of these will be employed by the Environment Agency and located at depots across all areas of England.
The Agency is expecting to issue a tender notice in January for a training provider who can provide either:
- National coverage for all of the above for all English counties from the Scottish borders to South West Cornwall
- National coverage for the majority of the above, and the ability to sub-contract to fulfil the total requirement
- National coverage on area basis (for example, managing a consortium of local providers).
Training providers must be approved to deliver apprenticeships either as a Main Provider, or as a Supporting Provider (sub contractors) by applying to the register of apprenticeship training providers (RoATP).
