Infrastructure leaders launch major health, safety & wellbeing project

Leaders from leading UK infrastructure firms have joined forces in a new initiative intended to drive a “step change” in the safety, health and wellbeing of workers involved in major projects.

Members of the Infrastructure Client Group (ICG), including Tideway, National Grid, Highways England, HS2 Ltd, Heathrow and Transport for London, are all taking part in the scheme.

The group have now committed to developing a set of action points by April 2020 to tackle seven areas identified as posing a “significant risk” to the industry’s workforce.

The areas are:

  • People & Mobile plant
  • Mental health
  • Striking buried services
  • Lifting operations
  • Heavy goods vehicles operations
  • Hand-arm vibration related disease
  • Public safety

The group is aiming to eliminating the illness and injury caused by the risks in these areas by 2025.

city-3234987 1280Steve Hails, director of health safety & wellbeing at Tideway said:

“Our research signposts the key health, safety and wellbeing risks that our sector faces. We are working collaboratively to make sure we crack down on these risks. If you want to play a part in securing game-changing improvements to the industry, I would strongly encourage you to volunteer your support for this important work”.

Dale Evans, Managing Director of @one Alliance, the collaborative organisation of Anglian Water and key supply-chain partners, is the current chair of the ICG.

Suppliers, contractor and clients throughout the supply chain are invited to sign up through the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA), which is supporting the project. CECA chief executive Alasdair Reisner commented:

“In recent years the industry has made great strides in improving the health, safety and wellbeing of those working to deliver UK infrastructure. Yet we know that there is more to do.

“To address some of the enduring risks that we see across the industry, we believe that it is essential to work together. This will maximise our ability to identify and deliver the best solutions to these risks, providing consistency for clients and suppliers. We look forward to working with the Infrastructure Client Group to deliver this change.”
