Northumbrian Water is enhancing its sustainable energy mix and adding a first electric vehicle to its operational fleet.
As part of the company’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2027, Northumbrian Water aims to make all new vehicle purchases for its thousand-strong fleet zero emissions from 2024.
The introduction of the second generation Nissan ENv200, which will be used by one of the company’s meter readers, starts the journey towards that goal.
Through the water company’s partnership with leasing firm VLS, Nissan showcased the first generation model at Northumbrian Water’s second Innovation Festival in 2018. The updated model’s extra mileage capability makes it a viable option for meter reading.
Fleet Manager Kate Wilson said:
“We have strong emissions ambitions at Northumbrian Water, which include being carbon neutral by 2027 – more than 20 years ahead of the target set by Government last week.
“We’ve seen the evolution of electric vehicles and their viability is increasing to the point where it is now becoming feasible to consider them for our fleet, helping to protect the environment in the communities we serve.
“Through our relationship with VLS, we’ve been able to work to bring this Nissan vehicle into the fleet, while our third Innovation Festival in July will see us explore further innovations to make our fleet fit for the future in partnership with Ford.”
