Welsh Water is getting ready to start work on a project to upgrade the drinking water network in Bodelwyddan, Kinmel Bay and Abergele.
The work by the not-for-profit utility company will see over 11km of old pipe which is nearing the end of its operational life replaced with brand new water pipe. The work will include replacing and cleansing sections of water pipes.
The scheme, which will start in Bodelwyddan Playing fields before moving on to Kinmel Bay and Abergele, is expected to be completed by the end of March 2020.
The upgrade forms part of a £6.9 million investment by the company on the drinking water network across Conwy and Denbighshire. This follows a £12.2 million investment in the drinking water network in parts of Flintshire in 2016/17 and £14.85 million in Anglesey which was completed earlier in the year.
With the UK government demanding a 50% reduction in storm overflow spills by 2029, the era of reactive management is over. Speaking in the House of Commons on 21 July 2025, then environment secretary Steve Reed said, “This Government will cut water companies’ sewage pollution in half by the end of the decade.”
