Roscommon County Council has given Irish Water the go-ahead for its proposed Roscommon main drainage sewerage scheme to reduce the risk of sewers flooding and improve water quality.
Irish Water said it is committed to improving the sewer network in Roscommon town by upgrading the existing network and constructing new sewers, pumping stations and storm water holding tanks. When complete, the works will
- reduce the risk of sewers flooding
- improve water quality in the Jiggy and Hind Rivers
- ensure compliance with Irish and EU regulations
- facilitate economic development
Roscommon County Council has recently granted planning permission for the essential works.
Colm Claffey, Irish Water’s Infrastructure Lead commented:
“Irish Water is committed to improving the wastewater network in Roscommon which has experienced increased storm water overflows and pollution events. These events are negatively affecting the water quality in the Hind and Jiggy rivers.
“The existing sewer system collects and combines rain/surface water and wastewater. This results in high volumes of both surface water and wastewater to be managed. Upgrades are required to the collection system to improve the situation and to this end Irish Water has recently been granted planning permission which we welcome.”
The project will include the construction of new higher capacity sewers, new pumping stations and new storm water holding tanks.
Construction is expected to commence at the end of 2020 and to be completed within 18 months.
Official opening of upgrades to six wastewater treatment plants in Co Leitrim
Yesterday saw the official opening of upgrades to six wastewater treatment plants in County Leitrim – the works will ensure that all six plants comply with national and European environmental regulations and that receiving waters are protected at all locations.
The upgrades have modernised the plants, improved energy efficiency, and ensure there is adequate spare capacity at each location to support population and economic growth across the county.
The works were carried out in two projects - the Mohill and Manorhamilton works delivered by Coffey Water Ltd on behalf of Irish Water, and the Ballinamore, Carrigallen, Drumshanbo and Leitrim Village project delivered by RCC Engineering Ltd.
The projects all form part of Irish Water’s investment plan which involves a €5.5 billion investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.
