Yorkshire Water progresses multi million pound AMP8 mains replacement work

Yorkshire Water is progressing work on a number of AMP8 mains replacement projects, including a £4.5 million water mains replacement scheme in Calderdale.

MAINS REPLACEMENT WORK GENERIC 2

The water company started the first phase of a £4.5 million water mains replacement scheme in Calderdale on Tuesday this week which will see 11km of clean water mains replaced across Sowerby Bridge in five phases over the next 18 months. Once complete, the reliability of drinking water supply will improve, with leakage and mains bursts in the area less likely.

In the initial phase, old mains will be replaced with durable, flexible plastic piping.

Scott Gammon, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said:

“As part of Yorkshire Water’s £8.3bn largest ever investment into its infrastructure, we are delivering a significant upgrade to our clean water network - since April last year, we have replaced over 170km of pipework across the region.

“Our infrastructure in Sowerby Bridge needs updating – it has a history of frequent bursts, some of which have resulted in temporary supply interruptions for customers – and we have worked with local stakeholders to bring forward this work, which was initially planned for 2028, so that residents can start to feel the benefits much sooner.”

Contract partners Sapphire Utility Solutions are carrying out the work on behalf of Yorkshire Water. The first phase is expected to be completed in May 2027, with the remaining four phases still in planning. The overarching project is expected to be completed by October 2027.

Sapphire Utility Solutions have also separately started work on a £780,000 project replacing 1.8km of clean water mains in Bingley to improve the reliability of drinking water supply, reduce leakage, and prevent water mains bursts in the area.

The project is one of eight mains replacement schemes either completed, underway, or planned across Bradford in the first 12 months of the five-year programme – totaling 16.1km of replaced pipework. Completed schemes include a £1.5 million project in Laisterdyke, a £700,000 project in Oakworth, and a £355,000 scheme in Lower Wyke.

Sapphire Utility Solutions are expected to complete the Bingley project in October 2026.

Yorkshire Water has also begun work on a £780k project to replace 2.3km of water mains in the North Yorkshire villages of North Cowton and East Cowton - contract partner United Infrastructure will be replacing the mains pipework. The project is expected to be completed in the summer.

The water company is prioritising poor performing assets that will benefit most from mains renewals - areas prone to disruption, bursts and supply interruptions. In North Yorkshire, so far, schemes have been completed in Grassington, Bedale, Settle, Sutton, Hauxwell to Hunton, and Thirn to Thornton.
