Yorkshire Water making progress with sewer renovation work

Yorkshire Water is making headway in giving Victorian sewers in its network a 21st century makeover as part of its ongoing investment to protect the local environment by further reducing the risk of sewer flooding in the region.

This month Yorkshire Water's contract partners Mott MacDonald Bentley will begin work on a £20,000 project to renovate a 25 metre stretch of sewer at Whitby. The company is using pioneering 'no dig' techniques to carry out the essential work to the sewer in order to avoid digging up the path and disrupting user access in any way whilst the work is taking place.

The work, which is expected to last four days, will be done in two phases. The first will involve using high pressure jetting equipment to clean the sewer before a mini robot on wheels equipped with CCTV equipment is placed inside the pipe to complete the survey and check for any faults or structural areas of weakness.

The second phases will then see any areas of weakness addressed, with contractors sealing any weakened or loose joints on the pipe, before inserting a sock-like structural liner inside the pipe through the nearby manhole, which will serve as an additional protective layer, further boosting the robustness of the pipe.

The work is the latest investment Yorkshire Water is making to improve its sewerage network in Whitby, and follows on from a £1.1million programme of work which the company undertook in the town last year which included a £750,000 project to successfully repair a 76 metre section of sewer running under Whitby Harbour.

In Sheffield a £15,000 scheme is currently underway with contractors Peter Duffy Ltd replacing a small section of sewer on the outskirts of the city, which has been prone to problems in recent years due to its age and the increasing volume of flows running through it. Peter Duffy Ltd also started a similar £15,000 project in Skipton this week.

Finally, last week saw the completion of a £500,000 scheme in York by Mott MacDonald Bentley and Duffy to replace two stretches of Victorian-era sewer which have been prone to collapsing in recent years due to their age.

Yorkshire Water's £120million investment over the next five years will enhance its sewer network ensuring it is better able to deal with the increasing flows of waste water which run through it. On top of this, the company will also be installing more pumping stations around the region which help to speed up the sewage treatment process.
