GMB Reaction to Announcement Of 600 Job Cuts At Severn Trent Water

GMB to make representation to Government over water companies treating OFWAT as a paper tiger.

Gary Smith, GMB National Officer for the water industry reacting to today's announcement of 600 job cuts at Severn Trent water said:  "For the company to sack 600 of its staff after it paid a special dividend to shareholders of £580 million recently shows what the water companies think about their customers and employees.  Severn Trent face a fine for having missed their customer service targets but they have shown scant regard for this poor service.  How will sacking 600 people save this service?

GMB will insist that there is proper consultation about these redundancies and we will want to know the exact impact they will have on the service to customers and to the work loads of their colleagues.

GMB will also make representation to Government over how the water companies treat OFWAT as a paper tiger as they walk away with large sums of money that comes from their hard pressed consumers."
