£25 million Southern Water scheme nears completion

Southern Water’s £25 million environmental improvement scheme at Millbrook treatment works is nearing completion.

Alan Whitehead MP and Southampton City Council leader Simon Letts visited the works on Southampton Docks last week to see for themselves how the investment is benefiting the Solent.

A presentation by the project team from Southern Water and contractor 4Delivery set out key achievements for the scheme, including:

  • The investment will ensure the treated wastewater leaving the site is of the best ever quality, in line with new EU standards
  • A large number of workers were employed from the local area
  • About 90 per cent of waste material was reused or recycle
  • More than 250,000 hours were worked without a serious accident – raising thousands of pounds for the Southampton Opportunity Group through a health and safety incentive.

Work on the major scheme used about 9,000 cubic metres of ,  3,000 metres of new cable ducts and 1,500 metres of new pipeline.

Southern Water’s Major Project Manager Stewart Garrett said:

“This is one of the biggest schemes Southern Water has carried out over the last five years and it will have many environmental benefits. We were pleased to be able to show Mr Whitehead and Cllr Letts around the site and explain its importance to the local area.”

The water company and 4Delivery are now redeveloping the Woolston treatment works.
